CNM and Bewellnm partner for affordable student health plans

Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) announced its collaboration with BeWellNM to assist students in obtaining affordable or no-cost health plans. Although continuous enrollment has concluded, students seeking coverage can currently explore and enroll in cost-effective health insurance plans through BeWellNM, a platform designed for New Mexicans no longer eligible for Medicaid, according to a press release by CNM.

BeWellNM serves as a resource for individuals without job-based insurance. It offers assistance in accessing health coverage. The organization conducts outreach on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month during Food Pantry hours on Main Campus. In addition, BeWellNM is organizing enrollment events throughout Nov. to aid individuals in discovering and enrolling in suitable health insurance plans, said CNM.

“We understand that having access to healthcare is essential not only for students’ success in the classroom, but in all areas of their lives,” said Mia Mendoza, Director of Wellness CNM. “The purpose of the partnership with BeWellNM is to break down barriers students often face and help them navigate this complex process with someone who is experienced and friendly.”

Established through state legislation in 2013, BeWellNM was formed to facilitate affordable healthcare coverage for individuals and is overseen by a 13-member board, according to the BeWellNM website.

“Mia and I connected to see how we could better support CNM students during this transition period,” said Tonya Bruno, BeWellNM’s Director of Outreach. “Students often work part-time which means they don’t receive employer benefits. They also may make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and/or have aged out of their parents' insurance coverage, leaving them uninsured. BeWellNM exists to help in these exact situations. All of this to say, we’re here and ready to help CNM students get the healthcare coverage they need.”
