New Mexico State University (NMSU) has announced that Jon Barela, the CEO of the Borderplex Alliance is the first-ever recipient of the Kevin B. Boberg Excellence in Economic Development Award. This award honors individuals with a demonstrated commitment to collaboration with the university and the broader community, according to a press release by NMSU.
With Barela as Secretary, New Mexico quadrupled trade in just three years, creating over 16,000 private-sector jobs and initiating major private-sector construction projects. He assumed the role of CEO at the Borderplex Alliance in 2016. As CEO of the Borderplex Alliance, an economic development and policy advocacy organization, Barela leads a unique privately funded organization representing two countries and three states with a focus on El Paso, Las Cruces, and Juárez regions, said NMSU.
"It is with great humility that I accept this meaningful award named in Dr. Boberg’s honor", said Barela according to NMSU. "Dr. Boberg’s enduring spirit continues to inspire those who had the privilege of working alongside him in his final years. His passion for community and gift for uplifting others left an indelible mark on our organization. We are grateful for the time we had with Dr. Boberg and will strive to live by his example of selfless service to our region each day.”
Named after Kevin Boberg, The Kevin B. Boberg Excellence in Economic Development Award is sponsored by New Mexico State University's Arrowhead Center and the Border Industrial Association. Kevin Boberg played a crucial role in establishing and leading NMSU's Arrowhead Center, leaving a lasting legacy through his significant contributions to both economic development and community engagement initiatives during his three decades of service before his passing in Mar. 2021 stated NMSU.
