The University of New Mexico (UNM) announced that Professor Ann Gibson was recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) with the 2023 Recognition Award. Having contributed significantly to teaching and research at UNM, Gibson has been associated with ACSM since 2010, said a press release by UNM.
"UNM Exercise Science Professor recognized by American College of Sports Medicine," declared a statement from the institution.
Since its inception in 1982, this award annually acknowledges individuals who demonstrate excellence in scholarly achievement and service to SWACSM. Gibson has contributed to the 11th edition of ACSM's "Guidelines for Exercise Testing & Prescription". She served as the lead author for the academic textbooks "Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription," editions 8 and 9. Alongside these major works, she has also published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts, stated a press release by UNM.
In response to receiving such prestigious recognition, Gibson said: “It is humbling and astonishing at the same time. I never, in my wildest dreams, imagined that my name would be on that list with the giants on whose shoulders I stand.”
Praising Gibson's contributions to SWACSM, UNM, students at both undergraduate and graduate levels, Exercise Science Professor Len Kravitz said: “This is a fabulous and well-deserved tribute to Ann... We are all so fortunate to have her as a colleague.”
Exercise Science Associate Professor Fabiano Amorim applauded Dr. Gibson's recognition with ACSM as it showcased not only her dedication but also her significant contributions which have elevated UNM's reputation within this professional field. He further added: “Dr. Gibson's recognition adds to the legacy of UNM, placing her name with other respected researchers including a previous awardee from UNM, Dr. Vivian Heyward.”
