Tian Ma | Sandia National Laboratories

Sandia National Laboratories announced that Tian Ma, a computer engineer in research and development, has been named the 2023 Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers-USA. Ma's groundbreaking work in remote-sensing systems, particularly his innovative data processing algorithms, has played a crucial role in the detection and tracking of objects essential for national security missions, according to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories.

The Asian American Engineer of the Year award is a prestigious honor that recognizes Asian American engineers for their technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to public service. Previous recipients of this award include Nobel laureates and astronauts, highlighting the significance of Ma's achievement.

Ma is no stranger to recognition for his contributions to the field of engineering. He has received multiple awards, including the 2016 Asian American Most Promising Engineer of the Year from the Chinese Institute of Engineers and the 2020 Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers Professional Achievement Award. His extensive patent portfolio and peer-reviewed journal publications further demonstrate his expertise and impact in the field.

Tian Ma's journey in engineering began in 2003 when he started a fellowship at Sandia National Laboratories. This opportunity eventually led him to earn master's and doctorate degrees in engineering. His areas of specialization include computer vision, data analytics, remote sensing, and decision science. In addition to his technical work, Ma also serves as a mentor to students and colleagues in STEM fields. He is a founding board member of the New Mexico Future City Competition, a STEM contest for middle school students that continues to grow in popularity.

“This is a very prestigious award and a nationally recognized achievement,” said Tian Ma, according to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories. “Receiving this award is very significant and a huge honor.”

“I want to help people with diverse backgrounds and cultures connect so that we all have a community to lean on,” said Tian Ma, according to a press release by Sandia National Laboratories. “My family relocated to the U.S. from China when I was just 11, and I didn’t speak the language or understand the culture at that time. What I’ve learned over the years is that people from different cultures often share similar values, hopes and dreams for themselves and their families. I strive to build bridges that connect people to their neighbors and communities, while supporting their professional passions.”

Tian Ma's contributions to the field of engineering and his commitment to fostering inclusivity and community make him a deserving recipient of the Asian American Engineer of the Year award. His pioneering work in remote-sensing systems continues to have a significant impact on national security missions, and his dedication to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals is commendable.
