Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) has announced a framework established by board members that outlines the essential qualities and blueprint for the superintendent search. According to a press release by APS, the board addressed various aspects, including the search timeline, public input, advertising channels, and potential salary ranges.

During an October 18 workshop facilitated by Dr. Walter Cooper, board members outlined key qualities for the superintendent search. The search is being assisted by McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, with the goal of finding a replacement for Superintendent Scott Elder when his contract expires on June 30, 2024. The timing of the search coincides with ongoing school board elections, and strategies were discussed to involve the newly elected board members to ensure their readiness when assuming office.

"I feel very confident with the search firm we selected," said Board President Yolanda Montoya-Cordova.

While the specific salary range is still being finalized, the board has reached a consensus to set the lower limit as a percentage above the salary of the second-highest paid APS employee. The upper limit is expected to be around $320,000.

APS has outlined the qualities they are seeking in a new superintendent, including an experienced, student-focused educator and reformer committed to improving outcomes and addressing equity and racism. The preliminary timeline for the search includes national advertising of the position, utilizing platforms such as The School Superintendents Association and Education Week TopSchoolJobs. In November, an online survey and town hall meetings will be held to gather community input. The application deadline is set for December 12.

Board members will then discuss and interview candidates in executive session following the inauguration of the new board members in January. Finalists will participate in public town halls and board interviews later in the month. The selection of a candidate is scheduled for January 31.

Albuquerque Public Schools is committed to finding a superintendent who will lead with a focus on students and work towards improving outcomes and addressing equity and racism. The board is taking steps to ensure a thorough search process that includes input from the community and integrates the newly elected board members.
