The New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) is recognizing the importance of mental health and well-being on World Mental Health Day. In a press release, HSD stated their commitment to fostering a healthier and more resilient state where everyone can thrive.

To support these efforts, New Mexico Medicaid is implementing enhanced Medicaid rates for five essential behavioral health practices. These rates are pending approval by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through a State Plan Amendment (SPA) and will be effective retroactively from July 1, 2023, for approved providers.

The five proven behavioral health practices that will receive the enhanced reimbursement rates are Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, Functional Family Therapy, Multisystemic Therapy, and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Agencies and practitioners interested in offering these services and accessing the incentivized rates can submit applications through the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Center of Innovation (COI). The COI, part of NMSU's Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Department, provides training and program support to community providers, creating a supportive environment for practical skill development and training.

HSD is dedicated to making critical behavioral health services more accessible to all New Mexicans. Alex Castillo Smith, deputy secretary for the New Mexico Human Services Department, emphasized this commitment, saying, "Our commitment to improve mental health care in New Mexico remains steadfast. By offering enhanced reimbursement rates for these evidence-based practices, we are dedicated to making these critical services more accessible to all New Mexicans."

In addition to the enhanced rates, HSD encourages New Mexicans to seek the support they deserve for their mental health. Nick Boukas, HSD's Behavioral Health Services Director, stated, "We encourage New Mexicans to seek the support they deserve. Everyone's mental health is of utmost importance, and there is no shame in seeking help." Boukas also highlighted the availability of the 24/7 mental and emotional support lifeline at 988.

On World Mental Health Day, the New Mexico Human Services Department is taking significant steps to prioritize mental health and well-being in the state. By implementing enhanced Medicaid rates for essential behavioral health practices and encouraging individuals to seek support, HSD aims to create a healthier and more resilient New Mexico.
