On September 28, 2023, the City of Albuquerque announced that four senior centers in the city had achieved national accreditation from the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). The Los Volcanes, Palo Duro, and North Valley Senior Centers, along with the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, were recognized for meeting the rigorous standards of excellence set forth by NISC.

According to a press release, City Councilor Isaac Benton congratulated the centers in a proclamation, which was presented to the Department of Senior Affairs and center staff during the Albuquerque City Council meeting on Monday, September 18, 2023.

The City of Albuquerque also received a NISC Program of Excellence Award in Technology, Virtual, and Hybrid Programming for its 50+ Senior Tech Fair event, which teaches technology skills to older adults. This award was given in addition to the national accreditation.

The achievement of national accreditation is significant, as it is a mark of excellence in senior center operations. Out of approximately 11,000 senior centers across the country, fewer than 2% meet the stringent NISC standards.

“We commend the Department of Senior Affairs staff for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that Albuquerque’s senior centers are among the best in the country,” said Councilor Benton.

The NISC Building Excellence program has been conducting peer reviews and accreditation for senior centers since 1998. It has set a benchmark for senior center capabilities and introduced nine standards of excellence in senior center operations. This program serves as a valuable roadmap for senior centers nationwide to enhance their current operations and prepare for future growth and development.

Anna Sanchez, the Director of Senior Affairs, expressed pride in the staff for their efforts in achieving NISC accreditation. She also mentioned that the process has provided an opportunity for the department to learn from other senior centers across the United States and meet the evolving needs of Albuquerque families as they age.

Overall, the national accreditation and Program of Excellence Award highlight the City of Albuquerque's commitment to providing high-quality services and programs for older adults.
