Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) has recently announced the introduction of an accelerated 18-week program through its Fire Academy. This program aims to address the increasing demand for emergency responders in the area. Students who enroll in this program will gain certifications in entry-level firefighting and EMT-Basic, as well as receive comprehensive training to prepare for certification exams from respected organizations. However, it is important to note that students need full-time sponsorship from a fire department to be eligible for enrollment.

Amy Tixier, CNM’s Associate Dean of Health, Wellness & Public Safety, emphasized the college's open-door policy with all fire departments in the area. This signifies CNM's commitment to working closely with local fire departments to provide quality training and education to aspiring firefighters. The CNM Fire Academy is proud to have a team of instructors who are active or retired firefighting experts, ensuring that students receive top-notch instruction.

Not only does this program prepare students for full-time firefighting positions, but it also allows them to complete half of a Fire Science Associate's Degree. Moreover, CNM has partnered with the Valencia County Fire Department, which has generously donated a fire engine to enhance the training experience for students. The support from public safety partners is greatly appreciated by CNM, as it allows for the growth and development of the Fire Academy.

According to Amy Tixier, the need for qualified firefighters is evident across New Mexico. The CNM Fire Academy is taking a proactive approach to meet this need by offering an accelerated program that equips students with the necessary skills and certifications to excel in this demanding profession. Aspiring firefighters can now take advantage of this comprehensive 18-week program, which not only provides valuable training but also opens doors to exciting career opportunities in the field.
