Obituary

John Hughes McCausland, 93 years old, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 25, 2023, following a long illness. John was born November 17, 1929, in Steubenville, OH to Kathryn Mae (Chayter) and Charles Hubert McCausland. He was raised in a very close Christian family with 1 sister and 2 brothers.

Upon graduating from high school and due to his health, he hitchhiked to Albuquerque, NM to attend UNM and graduate in the first class of Architectural Engineering. He worked in Albuquerque for the Corps of Engineers where he was recognized for his work on various projects multiple times, retiring at age 55. A running joke: when family members would ask how he was doing, he replied, "practicing and perfecting the art of laziness!”

John knew no strangers and was anything but lazy! He kept close track of each family member and tried to be involved despite his limitations. He was always very active in church participating in various capacities and attending Bible studies which he continued to participate in after moving into a retirement center. He loved to ski, ice skating including hockey, bowling, hiking, painting pictures, calligraphy, wood carving, photography of everyone and everything! He was allergic to animals but loved the family dogs. He always had one nearby. Snoopy was always his favorite cartoon! He maintained a close friendship with his college buddies and peers from work going to lunch every month to relive memories and discuss current events until they were no longer able to meet due to age and health.

He loved his Grandsons and was especially proud of their service to their country. He was supportive of Burton and his ministry. He really enjoyed listening to his weekly 'Healing Scars with Pastor Burton' podcast every week. When the weather was bad, he always checked to be sure Jon made it back to town safely and followed his cosplay group activities. He enjoyed seeing them in their costumes.

He was passionate about furthering the word of God, politics along with things to improve the lives of children, domestic violence, and supporting animal shelters.

He was married 48 years to Beverlee Rae Calkins (Bevy) and had a very active life between church, family, work, and his passions. He had 2 daughters. After Bevy passed away, he was married 10 years to Virginia (Ginny) Moyer. They were very active with church, tennis and entertaining in their home. He shared Ginny's 3 children and their families with enthusiasm.

He is survived by his daughter, LoisAnn Brock and her husband Elbert; grandson, Burton Louis Rominger Sr. (Theresa Clark); great-grandson, Burton Louis Rominger Jr; grandchildren, David Jon Rominger (Dana Chisholm), Robert Moyer (Carla), Cindy Drake (John) and Karen Moyer (Jamie).

John is preceded in death by his parents, Kathryn and Charles McCausland; siblings, George Kenyon (Stick) McCausland, Mary Eleanor Hartsock, and Charles H. McCausland (Beeb); both wives, Beverlee and Virginia; and his daughter, Amy Jo.

A very special Thank You to Brookdale on Valencia for the friendships, joy and kindness demonstrated while John lived there. Thank you for checking on him with a smile, prayer, and warmth of friendship. He truly had a home and neighborhood there that he loved.

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die."' ~John 11:25-26
