Priscilla Smith said the beauty industry literally saved her life. Now it’s a passion she shares with others who might need help getting their lives back on track.

Smith owns Paixao Nail and Beauty Bar in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and also created Passions Story, a nonprofit salon that helps women complete beauty school.

“I believe that, if you give a girl a chance, she can change the world,” Smith told KOB.

“We have a scholarship fund that we’re raising money for and so we put them through beauty school,” Smith said. “Along the way, they’ll have access to counselors and therapists that guide them through that. Then, after they graduate, they would then come and work at Passions Story Salon for 12 months.”

The practical experience the women will gain at Passions Story can help them obtain jobs and make them more marketable, according to KOB.

“We create people and I think, if you give a woman an opportunity to elevate her home, that concept and that self-worth are going to then float to her children and that is how you change generations,” Smith said.

Smith said she hopes to open the Passions Story Salon by the end of the year.
