Obituary

Douglas Brown Carter was born Wednesday, January 11, 1950, to Philip Hamilton Carter and Marjorie Brown Carter in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the age of 72 years in his home in Albuquerque. His wife Betty, family, and friends are grateful to have shared wonderful memories with Doug in his final days. All who knew him loved his wit, personality, and desire that “everyone just have fun.”

Doug was raised in Old Town Albuquerque where his family lived, his grandparents owned La Placita and La Hacienda restaurants.

He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1968, Covell College at the University of Pacific in 1977, and the School of Law at the University of New Mexico in 1985.

He had a gift for languages, being fluent in Spanish, German, and French; this giving him amazing value to the Albuquerque school system. Doug retired in 2015 after an outstanding career teaching at Rio Grande High School. Doug and his wife Betty were known throughout the national Western Swing community for their excellence in dance. Doug not only danced, but he also loved the costuming associated with it. He sported endless western, folkloric, Scottish, and German regalia. Doug also loved to read, travel, maintain freshwater fish tanks, and take part in trivia competitions. He was active in the following organizations: Irish American Society of NM, Edelweiss Am Rio Grande, German American Club, St. Andrews Scottish Society of NM, Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest, and the International Western Music Association NM Chapter.

Doug is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Maes de Carter; nieces, Laurel Griffen (Josh) and Annamarie Cowart; nephew, Michael Cowart (Jodi); and brother-in-law, Shannon Cowart, and a multitude of friends and relatives.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marie and Cyrus Brown, and sister, Janet Cowart.
