An Albuquerque man is trying to get the city’s police department to stop ATVs from constantly speeding in his southwest neighborhood before something tragic happens.
Doug Eier moved to Albuquerque from Georgia to enjoy a peaceful retirement, but the speeding ATVs have turned it into a miserable and potentially dangerous experience.
“Dirt bikes, ATVs, side-by-sides. Speeding, in general, is a problem here,” a frustrated Eier told KOB 4 News.
The sound of ATVs revving their engines has been going on for several months and could get worse during the holiday season. Eier claimed a speeding ATV almost hit a child near the Sunset Sierra Park area in Southwest Albuquerque.
“The final straw was ATVs down here in the grass area of the park,” Eier said, according to KOB 4 News. “This happens regularly, but I watched one of them almost hit a child who was probably five years old.”
Eier said he calls the city almost daily about the problem.
“It’s really frustrating,” he told KOB 4 News. “We’ve tried to deal with the parks department in the city for the past four and a half, five months with problems that have happened out here.”
When contacted by KOB 4 News, the Albuquerque Police Department reportedly said it "had not received reports of ATVs along Amole Mesa Avenue in two months, and that with the colder weather (fewer) ATVs will be out.”
Eier said he’d like to see more traffic control, stop signs, traffic lights or speed bumps along the streets, coupled with traffic enforcement and penalties.
