The co-owner of Martin Bros. Plumbing recently revealed that the store is closing after 86 years in business.

It was one of the last mom-and-pop shops in South Valley in Bernalillo County, according to KOB 4

"We've been planning this for about five years now," David Santillanes said. "He [David's oldest brother, Bob] said when you get about 62, we'll close the store."

The business started in 1936, KOB 4 reported. David and Bob took over in 1986 and decided to use the same name for their store. It was a popular spot in South Valley; local residents could find various plumbing and hardware supplies there.

"I've always come here – all my life," George Sanchez, a longtime customer, said. "My father has come here, also … If you're good with your customers and you treat them right, you'll have them for life."

A recent celebration included food and music, according to KOB 4. Attendees honored the history of the store and the life of co-owner Bob, who died at the age of 75.

"He passed away [on] Tuesday evening [at] about 8:30," David said. "I don't know how to explain it – he was a wonderful person. He taught me everything I know. He was the best brother – my best friend."

Bob was scheduled to attend the celebration of the business, KOB 4 reported. Family members and friends remembered him, instead.

"Now, it's a go-away, go-away party," Sanchez said. "It's a double go-away – one for the store and one for Bob."
