Obituary

Ouida Christine Lowrey was born Thursday, January 4, 1934 in Melrose, New Mexico, to Elliott Cleo McKinley and Cloris Nevada Cundiff. She was the middle daughter of three; her sisters, Wanda Tarpley and Janita Harris, preceded her in death. Ouida's mom died when she was only fourteen, causing her and her sisters to quickly grow up and become quite responsible, strong young women.

Ouida graduated from Portales High School in 1951 and got a job at the Telephone Company in Portales. Within days of her new employment, Ouida met I.D. "Barney" Lowrey. The first time she laid eyes on him, she knew he would be her husband. The two married in 1953 and soon moved to an apartment in Albuquerque. Ouida got a job at Master Cleaners and would walk to work every day.

In December 1955, Keith was born and the family of three moved into a new home where Ouida would live until 2018. Shortly after Keith's birth, another boy, Jim, was welcomed into the world on Christmas Day. Ouida had always wanted two sons two years apart- she was so happy with her family. Together, the four enjoyed camping, going to the YMCA, and playing in the backyard. They eventually built a houseboat on Conchas Lake, which brought them many happy memories with friends and family.

Ouida and Barney were married 46 years. After Barney's death in 1999, Ouida spent a lot of time traveling with her grandchildren, visiting her sisters, and volunteering. For over fifty years, Ouida was a dedicated and passionate volunteer at the VA Hospital. She took great pride in her work there and loved getting to help the nurses, doctors, and patients. At the hospital, she met fellow volunteer C.W. Johnson who became her longtime companion. C.W. and Ouida enjoyed traveling to Virginia and South Padre Island together. C.W. showed Ouida many kindnesses and was at her side until the end.

She is survived by her son, Keith; son Jim and his wife, Gwen; grandkids, Zach Guay, Piper Lowrey, and James Lowrey; and great-granddaughter Kayley Guay.
