Obituary
Ahnawake Taylor, age 89, beloved mother, was called to her eternal resting place on Sunday, July 3, 2022, in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by husband, Louis J. Taylor, and daughter, Carol Ann Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Mull; grandchild and special daughter, Erin Mull; grandson, Charley Johnson; son, Steven Taylor, wife Jennifer; and grandsons, Dino and Andrés Alvarado-Taylor, and many close friends.
Ahnawake entered this world on December 28, 1932, in Westville, OK, born to Charley and Jenny Hitcher. She lived in Westville and attended Seneca Indian School in Wyandotte, OK, for her elementary years. She then attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS, graduating from high school in 1950. She continued attending Haskell Institute for an additional two years as a Commercial - Business student, graduating in 1953. Following graduation from Haskell, she worked briefly for the Internal Revenue Service and the Kansas City Star in Kansas City, MO. She later returned to Lawrence, KS, and married Louis, her high school sweetheart. After raising her 3 children, she returned to Haskell Indian Junior College, graduating as Valedictorian in 1976. She continued her education, graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree, Social Work, in 1978 from the University of Kansas. Following that, she worked at Haskell Indian Junior College as a Cherokee language teacher.
After moving to Albuquerque, NM in 1985, she worked as a tutor for Native American students within the Albuquerque Public Schools. She also remained an active member of the NM Haskell Indian Alumni Association over many years and enjoyed spending time with friends as a member of the Cherokee Club of NM.
A Visitation will be held Friday, July 8, 2022, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Westside.
A Graveside Service will be held Friday, July 22, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
