In order to establish an increased trust in the police and create a safer community, the Albuquerque police department built a lowrider cruiser.

The intention of building the lowrider is to connect the gaps between the police community and the lowrider community, and bridge that gap in order to raise up the entire community, a KOB 4 news report said this week. It is an attempt to help communities who do not trust the police.

"As a Hispanic woman in Albuquerque, there has been a disconnect between the lowrider community and APD," City Councilor Klarissa Peña told KOB 4. "So we got together to see how we can bridge those gaps. Out of that sparked an appeal of our anti-cruising ordinance and then APD came to the task force and said, 'hey, we would love to develop an APD lowrider car.'"

The police department got $60,000 in gifts from the community in order to construct the lowrider, the report said. The APD hopes that other police departments see how bridging gaps between communities can strengthen the whole community and then follow suit in approving lowrider cruisers for their own police departments.

The car was put together by community members, not members of the police force, the report said.
