PNM's Yingling: In New Mexico's high-wind season, 'we have to be very proactive'

PNM, New Mexico's largest power company, is preparing for any effects that high winds may have on the state's power lines and poles.

PNM is concerned that the high winds may topple electrical poles and potentially harm people or property, a recent news report from KOB 4 said. The company typically prepares for the windy season months in advance and has teams at the ready to respond quickly should any problems arise.

"It could be a dangerous situation for the state," Sara Yingling, a PNM spokesperson, told KOB 4. "They are on call to respond within an hour of getting that notification, so if things do go downhill they are ready to respond and help out our crews who are already working."

Dry vegetation near poles and electrical lines is also a potential hazard, so the company has been dispatching crews to cut down any vegetation that might be dangerous.

"In New Mexico, we have to be very proactive given that it is a very dry environment," Yingling told KOB 4. "And with high-wind season, which we're in right now, it can be a very volatile situation. So being proactive, taking the steps to monitor any kind of vegetation around our poles is very crucial."

PNM urges New Mexico residents to call the company instead of attempting to cut down the vegetation themselves without the proper equipment.
