The University of New Mexico (UNM) golf team heads to Tucson, Arizona, looking to prove once again it can compete with the top programs in the country.

The National Invitational, hosted by the University of Arizona, will draw a strong field for the 54-hole event held on March 19 and March 20 at Tucson National Golf Resort.

The tournament will offer the Lobos a chance to test their skills against highly ranked teams.

New Mexico held its own in the Lobos' last tournament. New Mexico finished seventh at 15-under in an elite field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Country Club. Seven teams ranked in the top 25 were included in the field.

Top-ranked Oklahoma was the wire-to-wire winner, finishing at 38-under, seven shots clear of fifth-ranked Pepperdine at 31-under. No. 15 Texas was third at 29-under, followed by No. 24 Florida (20-under), No. 12 Georgia Tech (19-under), No. 9 Georgia (16-under), and the No. 29 Lobos (15-under).

“Overall, it was another good week for us,” Lobos golf coach Glen Millican said in a UNM release. “We had some really good play at times, and we also had some times when the team did a good job of hanging tough during some difficult stretches. It has been a good start to the spring and we are looking forward to getting back at it in a couple of weeks.”

Carson Herron was the Lobos’ low finisher at 7-under after a final round 69. Sam Choi had the low round of the day for UNM, posting a 4-under 68 to finish the tournament at even par. Brandon Shong shot even par in the third round to finish at 5-under. Bastien Amat shot 73 and Matthew Watkins shot 76 on Tuesday to round out the lineup.
