Teens damage new park doing 'donuts' with off-road vehicle

Anderson Heights Park, on the west side of Albuquerque, was recently damaged by teenagers doing "donuts" with an off-road vehicle, KRQE reported.

“Anderson Heights Park is one of our newest parks in the city system," Dave Simon, director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, told the station. "It was opened in May 2019. I think most people really appreciate parks in their neighborhoods; that’s why this is so disappointing, frustrating, and frankly, makes me and a lot of people angry.”

A bystander said the perpetrators were a group of young teenagers who were recording themselves committing the act, the station reported.

“A guy hopped out of the backseat and was standing there and recording them as they were doing donuts in the grass,” a witness, Page Griffin, told the station.

The ATV tore through the grass and sent dirt flying.

There is an ATV park meant for that type of driving not too far from the park, according to KRQE.

“They drive up and down the roads all the time and they race and it’s ridiculous,” Griffin told the station. “We’ve been trying to tell them to watch out because there’s kids here, but they’re not listening.”

The Parks and Recreation Department has set up barriers to prevent any more damage and is assessing how much it will cost to repair.
