Obituary
Father John Roger Conway, a priest of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, NM died on Friday, January 28, 2022, after a long illness. He was born on August 31, 1937, in Boston, MA. He attended IHM Seminary in Santa Fe and Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, TX. Father John was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe on May 31, 1969, at Sacred Heart Church in Newton, MA.
Preceding him in death were his parents Martin and Nora (Conroy) Conway. Surviving siblings are Mary Horton, Frank Conway and Ellen Kinsley who reside in MA; and Ann Stevens who resides in WA. Father Conway is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and his brother priests of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.
He served in NM parishes of Annunciation, St. Bernadette, and Holy Rosary in Albuquerque, St. Francis in Clayton, St. Alice in Mountainair, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Los Alamos, San Clemente in Los Lunas, and Holy Child in Tijeras. His longest assignment was at St. Jude Thaddeus in Albuquerque from 1991 until his retirement in 2007. He served as the director of deacons and deacon formation starting in 1976. For 24 years he assisted in various capacities in the tribunal of the archdiocese. Father John also served as Dean, member of the Finance Committee, and the Review Board of the archdiocese.
Under his leadership, a new rectory was built in Tijeras, and a new parish hall and rectory were constructed at St. Jude Thaddeus. Father John was a kindhearted, prayerful, and dedicated priest. During his retirement years he assisted at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish and other parishes that requested his help until his health began to decline. He also continued to celebrate masses for friends and families at The Village where he resided. He loved watching all sports and cheering any team from MA and NM. He was especially proud of the Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Father John will be greatly missed by all who knew him and cared for him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Little Brothers of the Good Shepard in Albuquerque or a charity of your choice.
Rosaries will be held at St. Jude Thaddeus on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at 3:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., and Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Jude Thaddeus, 5712 Paradise Blvd, NW, Albuquerque NM.
Other services and interment will be in MA at a later date.
