Obituary

James Albert (Jim) Hoffsis, 93, beloved father, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021. He was born on Friday, May 18, 1928, in Toledo, OH, to parents Winfield and Marie Hoffsis, one of eight siblings. He is survived by his son, John Hoffsis; and daughter in-law, Susan Hoffsis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joe Ann Hoffsis. Jim graduated from North Baltimore High School in 1948. James served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was a technical sergeant in the Korean war from 1952 to1953. In 1958, he became a sales representative for Chevron Oil Company and served nine states in the plains and Rocky Mountain regions until his retirement in 1974. That year, he moved his family from Billings, MT to Albuquerque, NM and took over operations of Treasure House, a gift and jewelry store in the plaza of Old Town. For the next 47 years, Jim would become a fixture and leader in the neighborhood, serving with both the Old Town Merchants Association and the Historic Old Town Property Owners Association, in addition to voluntarily raising and lowering the five flags in the plaza nearly every day. In 1999, he and his wife retired when his son John took over and changed the shop into Treasure House Books & Gifts. Still, he managed to show up every day, help-out and greet customers until shortly before his death. He was active in Albuquerque city affairs, serving on both the Lodgers Tax Board and the Landmarks Commission. In addition to being a Shriner, a Mason, and a Knights Templar, he was an active member of the Korean War Veterans Association, the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, and a frequent volunteer at the New Mexico Veteran's Memorial. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, 10:00 a.m., at FRENCH-University. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Korean War Veterans Association, Hiroshi Miyamura chapter.
