Tribute

Mercedes G. Romero, 82, lifelong resident of Santa Fe died on October 11, 2021 surrounded by her children.  She is survived by daughters Diane Mattern (Jeff) of Elko, NV, Loretta (Melvin Roybal) of Vadito, NM, sons Patrick (Judy) of Santa Fe, and JR of Reno, NV, grandchildren Alisha, David, and Daniel Romero of Santa Fe, Marina Mattern of Elko, NV, Kevin Romero (Kaitlin) of Chicago, IL, Alexis Romero of East Lansing, MI,  Larissa Padilla, two great granddaughters, Jay’la Hayes, and Paisley Mascarenas, sister Mary Ortiz all of Santa Fe and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Reymundo, and her parents Miguel and Sarah Gonzales. 

Mercedes had a lengthy career in state and local government. She began after high school with the Department of Education, spent 21 years with the Legislative Council Service which included working numerous legislative sessions for Leadership in the Senate and House. She continued involvement with the Legislature as a registered lobbyist, legislative coordinator and contracted as an analyst with the Legislative Border Development Committee and with local governments throughout New Mexico on redistricting.

She also served as Deputy State Treasurer and Special Assistant, Deputy Cabinet Secretary for the General Services Department and Santa Fe County Manager. 

Mercedes was a lifelong Democrat and past member of the State and County Central Committees, served as State Party Secretary and chaired both state and county committees.  She was a member of Santa Fe County Democratic Women and served as State Party Secretary for Young Democrats of New Mexico.

In addition, she served on Esperanza Board for Battered Women, Guadalupe Credit Union supervisory committee, Santa Fe county indigent Fund continuation committee and was a past member and officer of American Business Women’s Association and Las Amigas de Nuevo Mexico.

Visitation, Rosary and Reception will be held at McGee Memorial Chapel 1320 Luisa Street beginning at 3:00.  Mass and burial will be held at a later date.
