New Mexico has an additional 838 COVID-19 cases, state health officials announced Wednesday, bringing the state's total cases to 256,947.

There were 12 additional COVID-related deaths in the state, bringing total deaths to 4,840, the state Department of Public Health said in a news release. Most of the recent deaths were patients with underlying medical conditions.

Bernalillo County had the most new cases with 214. Four new cases were inmates at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Valencia County. There have also been cases among residents and staff at numerous long-term care facilities in New Mexico, according to state health officials.

"As of today, there are 336 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19," the news release said. "This number may include individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 out of state but are currently hospitalized in New Mexico. This number does not include New Mexicans who tested positive for COVID-19  and may have been transferred to a hospital out of state."

There have been 227,898 COVID-19 patients who have recovered from the virus, the state said.

"Every New Mexican must work together to stem the spread of COVID-19," the state said. "Wear a mask when in public and around others. If you are sick, stay home as much as possible. New Mexicans who report symptoms of COVID-19 infection, such as  fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and/or loss of taste or smell should call their health care provider or the NMDOH COVID-19 hotline immediately  (1-855-600-3453)."

The state also encourage residents to get vaccinated for the virus.

"Protect yourself and others by self-scheduling your vaccine at VaccineNM.org," the Department of Public Health tweeted. All residents 12 and older are eligible, the agency said on its website.
