Local doctors are concerned that they may soon become overwhelmed as the delta variant continues to cause an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, according to a KRQE report.

Additionally, doctors in Albuquerque have cautioned that the delta form of COVID -19 is now targeting a specific demographic, including children.

“In Presbyterian hospitals statewide, we’re experiencing a doubling of cases each week,” Medical Director of Presbyterian, Dr. Denise Gonzales, said, “Three weeks ago we had about 22 patients, last week about 45 and this week, we nearly have 90 patients hospitalized with COVID.”

According to the KQRE report, doctors said that 93% of the COVID patients they are currently treating are unvaccinated and pediatric cases are on the rise since children under the age of 12 are not eligible for vaccination.

“Evidence shows that COVID-19 is now really a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Gonzales said.

Additionally, data from the New Mexico Department of Health reveals that Hispanics, Native Americans, and individuals over the age of 35 are more likely to be hospitalized by the virus.
