The City of Albuquerque will begin providing incentives to attract more city workers after experiencing difficulty filling certain positions, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
Currently, the city government has over 900 job openings for the 6,500 positions budgeted for, and is seeking to fill about 530 of those positions immediately.
"As part of our ongoing commitment to public safety, we’re offering lots of good reasons for folks to come on board to work for the city we love and help with our robust recovery," Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said in a tweet.
The city plans to offer a $750 hiring bonus to most positions, including teachers, planners, and plumbers; other positions, such as firefighter-paramedic, are eligible for a bonus of up to $15,000.
Anthony Romero, director of the city's human resources department, told the Albuquerque Journal that the new incentives have increased interest in city employment.
The city received approximately 44,800 job applications in the fiscal year 2019; however, by the fiscal year 2021, that number had dropped by 28% to 32,200.
