State to hold clinics for student immunizations, COVID vaccinations

To help protect students from the COVID-19 coronavirus before the start of the new academic year, New Mexico is holding immunization clinics from July 24 to Aug. 14.

“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect your child from many diseases,” New Mexico Department of Health (NMDH) Cabinet Secretary Tracie Collins said. “I encourage all New Mexico parents to take advantage of the upcoming clinics.”

The initiative is part of the “Got Shots?” campaign, which will also ensure that students are up-to-date on their immunizations, according to KRQE. The state has included COVID-19 vaccines for children 12 years of age and older.

Brian Kokinadis, a Republican candidate for Congress last year, says it should be left up to parents whether to vaccinate their children.

"Each day more reports of complications with the vaccine surface in minors, yet, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will continue to force vaccinations," Kokinadis posted on Facebook this week. "This vaccination should be up to the parents, not the state."

A press release from the NMDH said that parents will need to present their child's shot records, insurance card or Medicaid card at the clinics, whether the clinic is providing immunizations for free or not, KRQE reported. Parents are advised to call the clinic before their visit in case an appointment is needed.
