Most public colleges and universities in New Mexico are waiving application fees during November as part of the annual 'No Fee November' campaign. The initiative is backed by the New Mexico Higher Education Department, New Mexico Public Education Department, and New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation.
College enrollment in the state has increased for four years in a row since the Opportunity Scholarship Act was enacted in 2022. This fall, enrollment rose by 3.6 percent, with over 40,000 residents working toward career training certificates or degrees.
"New Mexico continues to lead the nation in college access and affordability through the Opportunity and Lottery scholarships," said Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez. "The ‘No Fee November’ initiative helps eliminate another barrier to applying for college."
Officials encourage students to submit applications early so they have time to review requirements, academic programs, and financial aid options. Early applicants also improve their chances for admission and scholarships.
"Removing application fees allows more students—especially those from lower-income families—to apply to multiple colleges and universities and find the best fit for their goals," said Assistant Vice President Grace Tackman of the New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation. "When students find the right fit, they are more likely to complete their degrees and contribute to a stronger New Mexico."
High schools across New Mexico are hosting application events this month with recruiters from local colleges. The College Application Month campaign involves counselors, educators, and community partners who support students and families as they research options and complete applications.
"We want every student, regardless of their background or financial situation, to know that college is within reach," said Public Education Secretary Mariana D. Padilla. "By removing fees during National College Application Month, we’re ensuring cost doesn’t prevent any New Mexico student from applying."
Community members can join the campaign by sharing personal college experiences on social media using #WhyApply and tagging @NMHigherEd. Information about applications, scholarships, and resources is available at ReachHigherNM.com.
Several institutions—including Diné College; University of New Mexico branches at Gallup, Taos, Valencia; Western New Mexico University; New Mexico State University’s main campus (from July through December 1); and New Mexico Tech—are waiving application fees this month. Other colleges such as Central New Mexico Community College, Clovis Community College, Eastern New Mexico University campuses (Portales, Roswell, Ruidoso), Luna Community College, Mesalands Community College, several NMSU branch campuses (Alamogordo, Doña Ana, Grants), Northern New Mexico College, San Juan College, Santa Fe Community College, Southeast New Mexico College, University of New Mexico – Los Alamos and University of the Southwest do not charge application fees year-round.
