Laguna man sentenced to two years for violent assault

A man from the Pueblo of Laguna has been sentenced to two years in federal prison following a violent assault last year. Kenzie Alonzo, 26, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury after an incident on August 18, 2023. According to court records, Alonzo physically assaulted Jane Doe during a verbal altercation, causing her a concussion, severe bruising, and bite marks. The injuries required emergency medical transport and hospitalization.

There is no parole in the federal system. After completing his sentence, Alonzo will serve three years under supervised release.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison announced the sentencing. The Bureau of Indian Affairs led the investigation with help from the Zia Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jesse Pecoraro is prosecuting the case.

This announcement was made on November 13, following the conclusion of the federal government shutdown.
