As the local elections approach in New Mexico, gubernatorial candidate Deb Haaland has called on residents to support school bonds aimed at improving public school infrastructure across the state. School districts such as Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Santa Fe have reported ongoing problems with aging facilities, including inadequate cooling systems and leaking roofs, which can interfere with students' ability to concentrate.
“I urge voters across New Mexico to vote yes on the school bonds included on their ballots. If we want our students to succeed and be engaged, we must make sure our schools have basic infrastructure like air conditioning so they can focus on learning. As your next Governor, I’m looking forward to working with teachers, families, and students so our kids get better results and are prepared for any job they want,” said Haaland.
If passed by voters, the proposed bond in Albuquerque would provide funding for new classrooms, a facility dedicated to special needs education, a career technical education training center, and upgraded HVAC systems within Albuquerque Public Schools. In Las Cruces, approval of the bond would allow renovations of kitchen spaces, improvements to trade shops, roof repairs, and other essential projects that lack alternative funding sources. Similar initiatives are being presented in other districts statewide with the aim of creating safer and more effective learning environments.
Haaland highlighted New Mexico’s national ranking near the bottom in education performance as a reason for urgent action. She emphasized her commitment as governor to ensuring every student has access to quality public education that prepares them for future careers.
Haaland recently outlined her plan for preparing students beyond graduation in an op-ed published by the Albuquerque Journal. She also has received endorsements from educators and leaders including Yanira Gurrola, Andres Romero, Charlotte Little, Bill Soules, and Eleanor Chavez.
