Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is seeking approval for a $350 million bond on the upcoming fall ballot. The Rio Grande Foundation (RGF), while not objecting to how the funds would be used, has raised concerns about the necessity of such a large bond in light of recent trends.
According to RGF, there has been a significant decrease in student enrollment within APS, yet the district's budget has continued to grow. The organization suggests that voters should carefully consider whether this level of funding is justified given these circumstances.
Paul J. Gessing, president of RGF, recently spoke with KOAT 7 about these issues and encouraged voters to review their analysis before making a decision. "While we don't necessarily oppose the uses of the bond we have looked closely at the APS budget and have seen a steep decline in the student population while the District’s budget has exploded," said Gessing.
