Lockheed Martin has secured a $233 million firm-fixed-price contract to supply IRST21 Block II systems and initial spare parts to the U.S. Navy and Air National Guard. The IRST21 Block II is an advanced infrared search and track sensor designed to detect and follow airborne targets at long distances without emitting signals, which helps pilots operate in radar-denied or electronic attack environments.

The Block II version includes new optics, enhanced processors, and improved algorithms that increase the system’s threat detection range. It also provides tracking data for engagements beyond visual range. This contract follows the U.S. Navy’s recent declaration of Initial Operational Capability for IRST21, allowing Lockheed Martin to move forward with full-rate production of the upgraded system for deployment.

Cristin Stengel, program director for IRST21 at Lockheed Martin, said, “IRST21 Block II delivers a game-changing leap in passive warfighting capabilities across multiple platforms. By significantly enhancing the range and accuracy to enable weapon employment in challenging environments, this system ensures pilots remain ahead of evolving adversaries and mission-ready at all times.”

On F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft, IRST21 is installed on the nose of the centerline fuel tank alongside the AN/APG-79 radar. For F-15 and F-16 jets, it is integrated into an externally mounted Legion Pod, bringing modern targeting abilities to older aircraft models.

Lockheed Martin describes itself as a global defense technology company focused on innovation and scientific advancement to provide mission solutions across domains.
