Rob Black, Cabinet Secretary-Designate | New Mexico Economic Development Department
Since 1985, New Mexico MainStreet (NMMS), a program under the New Mexico Economic Development Department, has provided technical assistance and state Capital Outlay funding to communities throughout the state. These efforts have contributed to downtown revitalization, infrastructure improvements, job creation, and business growth.
On October 15, NMMS marked its 40th anniversary by honoring individuals and projects that have made significant contributions at an awards ceremony in Alamogordo. The program serves both rural and underserved areas—84 percent of MainStreet districts fall into these categories—and extends support to Native American communities, urban commercial corridors, Arts & Cultural Districts authorized by the state, and historic theaters.
Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Rob Black said, “Our MainStreet program creates opportunities across New Mexico, especially in our rural regions. It’s proof that strong leadership and long-term commitment can make a lasting difference in local communities.”
A major component of NMMS’s work is Capital Outlay funding granted annually by the legislature. Since fiscal year 2020, $38 million has been allocated for 67 projects aimed at improving public infrastructure within designated MainStreet districts.
Daniel J. Gutierrez, director of New Mexico MainStreet, stated: “NM MainStreet partners with local revitalization organizations to rebuild the local downtown economy. My team is honored to work with local communities on revitalization projects that positively impact the local economy.”
Since fiscal year 2015, MainStreet districts have reported over $4.3 million in private sector reinvestment, completion of 2,800 private building rehabilitations, establishment or expansion of 1,600 businesses, creation of 5,900 new jobs, and contribution of 384,000 volunteer hours.
NMMS currently supports 32 MainStreet districts and 13 Arts & Cultural Districts across New Mexico.
