Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, a U.S. Representative from New Mexico, posted several statements on her social media accounts addressing the recent federal government shutdown and its impact on public servants in her state.
On October 15, 2025, Leger Fernández wrote, "Good news for the 30,000+ New Mexican public servants who work for the federal government. We’ll keep fighting for them and against the president’s illegal actions." On the same day, she questioned Republican actions with a post in Spanish: "¿Por qué cerraron el gobierno los republicanos?" On October 16, 2025, she commented on her own situation during the shutdown, stating, "We’re all in this together. I’m not getting paid during this shutdown."
Leger Fernández has represented New Mexico in Congress since 2021. She won her seat in 2020 by defeating Alexis Martinez Johnson and was re-elected in 2022 and 2024, most recently prevailing over Sharon Clahchischilliage in a closely contested race.
The current government shutdown has affected thousands of federal employees across New Mexico, with more than 30,000 public servants impacted according to Leger Fernández's statement.
