New Mexico has achieved significant progress in reducing child poverty, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The state recorded a 3.2% decrease in child poverty, surpassing the national improvement of just 0.4%. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham emphasized New Mexico's dedication to fighting poverty, stating, "Our federal government is moving in the wrong direction, but New Mexico has proven its commitment to eradicating poverty."

The state's overall poverty rate also improved by 1.3%, compared to a national increase of only 0.3%. The supplemental poverty measure, which includes state-specific programs and tax credits, shows that while New Mexico's official child poverty rate is 24.2%, it drops to 10.3% under this measure. This difference highlights the effectiveness of recent initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty.

Stephanie Schardin Clarke, Secretary of Taxation & Revenue, noted that despite federal challenges, New Mexico has established a strong financial foundation to support vulnerable residents for years to come. Recent expansions in benefits include food and housing assistance, free college tuition, affordable health insurance, and early childhood education.

Since 2019, New Mexico has revised its tax code to favor low- and moderate-income families by expanding tax credits and rebates and reducing taxes on social security income. The introduction of universal childcare aims to further support families financially.

Elizabeth Groginsky from the Early Childhood Education and Care Department said that these investments have helped many move above the poverty line. Gabrielle Uballez from NM Voices for Children warned about potential setbacks due to possible federal cuts affecting essential programs like SNAP and Medicaid.

The New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department plays a crucial role in implementing these policies.
