California has enacted new legislation aimed at enhancing online protections for children. Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed the bill, which mandates features such as age verification and protocols to address issues like suicide and self-harm. It also imposes stricter penalties on those profiting from illegal deepfakes.

Attorney General Raúl Torrez of New Mexico expressed support for these measures. "My office has been actively fighting to improve online safety and hold social media companies — like Meta — accountable for protecting children from the dangers that exist on their platforms," Torrez said. He highlighted efforts during the 2024 regular session to pass similar legislation in New Mexico focusing on age verification and consumer data protection.

Torrez commended California's actions, urging the New Mexico Legislature to adopt similar measures. "The landmark legislation recently passed in California and signed by Governor Newsom should be commended — and emulated — across the country, as we strive to protect our children in the ever-evolving online world," he said. He emphasized the potential impact of such protections on families in New Mexico.
