The National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is preparing to celebrate Día de los Muertos with a series of family-friendly events. The holiday, observed across Latin America at the beginning of November, honors deceased friends and family members.
Festivities at the NHCC will begin on Saturday, October 18, with "Noche de Familia: Noche de Cempasúchil," featuring a screening of Disney*Pixar’s "Coco." This film follows Miguel, a young boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family's ban on music. Before the movie starts at 5:00 p.m., visitors can participate in interactive green screen demonstrations from 4:00 p.m.
On Saturday, October 25, the NHCC will mark its 25th Anniversary Celebration with activities inspired by Día de los Muertos traditions. Families can contribute to a community ofrenda and view displays created by local schools and organizations. Activities include decorating sugar skulls, crafting paper flowers, face-painting, and more.
The annual Día de Familia event will take place on Saturday, November 2. It offers another chance to engage with the community ofrenda and participate in crafts. Attendees can sample Pan de Muerte and enjoy food from local vendors. Participants are encouraged to bring a non-returnable photo or item for the community ofrenda.
All events are free to attend. More information and registration details are available at nhccnm.org/events.
