Rep. Block on Hamas-Israel conflict: 'Pray for peace in the Middle East'

John Block, a House representative from New Mexico, has expressed his commitment to honoring the victims of the October 7, 2023 attacks. He urged for the return of 48 hostages and called for peace in the Middle East. This statement was made on X.

"As the day ends, I continue to remember the lives of the innocent souls brutally murdered on October 7, 2023, by Palestinian-Hamas terrorists, I pray for the 48 hostages (both alive and murdered) to be returned, and I also pray for peace in the Middle East," said JOHN BLOCK, New Mexico State Representative for 51st District (R). "ReleaseTheHostages."

Commemorations of the October 7 attacks have been held worldwide as diplomatic efforts move towards a ceasefire-hostage swap. According to Reuters, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. The plan aims to free remaining captives within 72 hours while Israeli forces redeploy and aid is directed into Gaza. This agreement follows two years of conflict and renewed calls from families for the release of hostages. However, Reuters notes that risks remain as details are being finalized.

The Associated Press reports that Israeli authorities say approximately 1,200 people were killed in the October 7 assault, with 251 abducted. As of October 11, 2025, Israel believes that 22 hostages are still alive in Gaza amid a ceasefire that would exchange them for prisoners. Separately, Reuters has reported that a total of 48 individuals are still held overall, with some declared dead in absentia. These figures highlight ongoing negotiations aimed at securing releases.

A timeline provided by Reuters shows staged releases since October 2023: on October 20, two Israeli-American hostages were freed; on October 23, two elderly Israelis were released; and on October 30, an IDF soldier was rescued. A truce mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S., which took place from November 24–30, enabled mass swaps that freed over 100 civilians while Israel released prisoners. These events inform current swap mechanics.
