Gabe Vasquez, U.S. Congressman representing New Mexico’s 2nd district, posted a series of statements on his social media account on October 8, 2025, addressing recent state actions to counteract federal funding cuts and highlighting his own efforts to support public safety initiatives in New Mexico.
In his first post, Vasquez thanked state officials for their response to federal budget reductions, stating, "Thank you to NM state lawmakers and the Governor for passing emergency funds to protect New Mexicans from DC Republicans' federal cuts to health care, food assistance, and more. This relief is so important for New Mexicans." (October 8, 2025).
He followed up with criticism of the circumstances leading to these measures, writing, "That is not an acceptable or sustainable solution. A reminder on how we got here: DC Republicans made these cuts that force working class New Mexicans to pay for tax cuts for billionaires." (October 8, 2025).
Later that day, Vasquez outlined specific public safety funding he helped secure, stating, "When New Mexicans told me they don’t feel safe, I did my job: $1 million for the Albuquerque real-time crime center, $500k for Bernalillo County’s public safety operations, $500k for a Deming mobile command, and $250k for the Carlsbad Police Department." (October 8, 2025).
Vasquez has represented New Mexico’s 2nd district in Congress since 2023 after defeating Yvette Herrell in the 2024 general election with 52.1% of the vote. He succeeded Herrell following his victory in a closely contested race.
