More than 100 tutors have begun the new program year for Albuquerque Reads at three schools in the Albuquerque Public Schools district. The program, organized by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, focuses on helping kindergarten and first-grade students improve their literacy skills.

Albuquerque Reads is a classroom-based initiative aimed at enhancing reading abilities among young learners to support lifelong education. The program emphasizes that children "Learn to Read" from kindergarten to grade two and "Read to Learn" from grade three onward.

The Chamber is actively seeking volunteers for the current school year. Tutoring sessions are held from mid-September through May, requiring just 90 minutes a week. Volunteers can also form teams with friends or colleagues to tutor once a month.

The program operates at Whittier, Atrisco, and Bel-Air elementary schools, providing personalized literacy tutoring for each student in kindergarten and first grade who participates. Each child receives up to 20 books for their home library and access to online reading resources.

The initiative continues to seek tutors specifically for Atrisco and Whittier elementary schools. Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring can find more information at abqreads.com or contact Kayla Nelson via email at abqreads@greaterabq.com.
