Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, U.S. Representative for New Mexico, posted a series of tweets on October 1, 2025, detailing the impact of a government shutdown on her state and informing constituents about available support from her office.
In an early morning post on October 1, Leger Fernández stated: "Republicans just shut down the government. Here’s what that means for New Mexico: Healthcare 46,000 will see premiums skyrocket if ACA tax credits expire. Nutrition 36,000 moms, babies & kids lose access to WIC and 459,000 SNAP recipients face cuts if shutdown drags on."
Later in the day, she shared two additional posts. One tweet included links without further comment: "https://t.co/LlzYjSvksj https://t.co/GFcM3WRmxx" (October 1). In another message that afternoon, Leger Fernández assured constituents that her office remains operational despite the shutdown: "My office is still open and my staff are working day and night for you—even if they don’t get paid. Just call (505) 428-4680 if you need help." (October 1).
Leger Fernández has represented New Mexico in Congress since her first election victory in 2020 against Alexis Martinez Johnson. She won re-election in both 2022 and 2024, defeating Martinez Johnson again in 2022 and Sharon Clahchischilliage in the most recent general election.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are federally funded programs providing food assistance to low-income individuals and families. A lapse in federal funding due to a government shutdown can result in reduced or suspended benefits for recipients.
