The University of New Mexico College of Nursing has been recognized among the top Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs nationwide, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Colleges list. The college is ranked 118 out of 694 nursing schools, placing it in the top 17% across the country.

“This ranking reflects the passion of our faculty, staff, students and community. We want our students to feel welcomed, supported and equipped to succeed,” said Sasha Poole, PhD, RN, assistant dean of undergraduate education at UNM College of Nursing. “We take pride in preparing nurses who can meet the unique needs of communities across New Mexico. Caring for our state is not something we do alone. It takes all of us to shape a healthier future.”

The college emphasizes preparing its students for work in rural and underserved areas as part of its mission within New Mexico’s primary Carnegie R1 research university. It has consistently held a spot among the nation’s best since undergraduate rankings began and remains New Mexico’s highest-ranked BSN program.

According to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, there is a significant shortage of nurses in the state, with an estimated need for 6,000 more professionals. In response to this demand, the College recently admitted its largest class yet—471 students—to help build a stronger and more diverse workforce.

Students express strong appreciation for their experience at UNM. Allison Burt, a student in the Freshman Direct-Entry program, stated: “The University of New Mexico College of Nursing has given me an opportunity to give back to my community in amounts greater than I can express. The support by staff, faculty and peers has made this experience one of the best I could have asked for. My gratitude for the school is unparalleled, and I am so excited to be the nurse that it is preparing me to be.”

Applications are currently open for prospective BSN students from various backgrounds.
