The City of Albuquerque has introduced the Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute, an initiative that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the state through leadership, service, and innovation. Mayor Tim Keller announced the launch and honored the first three recipients at a ceremony held at Albuquerque International Sunport.
A new permanent installation in the airport’s Great Hall will showcase the achievements of these honorees. The inaugural group includes James B. Lewis, Soledad Chávez de Chacón, and Dr. Lenton Malry.
James B. Lewis is recognized for his nearly five-decade career in public service across local, state, and federal government roles. He is noted for breaking racial and institutional barriers while maintaining integrity and commitment to public good.
Soledad Chávez de Chacón was celebrated as a former New Mexico secretary of state who became the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office in the United States in 1922. She later served as acting governor, marking a milestone for women and Hispanic leaders nationwide.
Dr. Lenton Malry was honored for his work as an educator and community advocate. In 1969, he became New Mexico’s first Black legislator and played a key role in transforming public education and advancing civil rights within the state.
The tribute coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting Chávez de Chacón’s legacy in promoting Hispanic leadership both locally and nationally.
“New Mexico is full of people who do the extraordinary — often without recognition,” said Mayor Keller. “The Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute is about honoring those who blaze new paths, uplift their communities, and push our state forward. These are the changemakers whose stories deserve to be told.”
According to city officials, this tribute aims to highlight individuals whose efforts have shaped New Mexico’s social, economic, cultural, and wellness landscape by fostering innovation and inclusion throughout the community.
Future honorees will be selected on a recurring basis based on criteria such as impact, innovation, integrity, and service.
Albuquerque International Sunport serves as New Mexico’s largest commercial airport with over 5.5 million passengers annually. It offers nonstop flights between Albuquerque (ABQ) and 32 destinations through eight major carriers along with cargo services.
