Gabe Vasquez, U.S. Congressman representing New Mexico’s 2nd district, used his social media platform on September 20, 2025, to address what he described as threats to fundamental rights and the importance of his congressional seat in national politics.
In a post published on that date, Vasquez stated: "Right now, some of the most fundamental rights in this country are under attack. MAGA Republicans are targeting this seat because they know how important NM-02 is to maintain control of the House." (September 20, 2025).
He reflected on recent accomplishments while emphasizing ongoing work: "Over the last four years, together, we have made progress making life more affordable, making our communities safer, expanding access to healthcare, and protecting our public lands. But we’re not even close to being done." (September 20, 2025).
Vasquez concluded with a call for support and civic engagement: "We can’t let this happen– I won’t. If you believe in protecting our democracy, our freedoms, and the communities too often pushed to the margins, then join our campaign at https://t.co/RXzNhpE6zv!" (September 20, 2025).
Vasquez was elected to Congress in 2024 after defeating Yvette Herrell with 52.1% of the vote compared to Herrell's 47.9%. He took office in January 2023 following that victory and has since focused his efforts on issues such as affordability, community safety, healthcare access expansion, and public land protection.
The competition for New Mexico’s Second Congressional District remains closely watched due to its potential impact on party control in the U.S. House of Representatives.
