The Library of Congress has announced that Arthur Sze, a poet from Santa Fe, has been named the 25th Poet Laureate of the United States. This title is considered one of the highest literary honors in the country. Sze's work spans over five decades and includes twelve books of poetry as well as "The White Orchard: Selected Interviews, Essays, and Poems," published by the Museum of New Mexico Press in 2025.
Arthur Sze commented on his appointment, stating, "Poetry has a crucial role to play in our lives, society, and the world. It helps us slow down, hear clearly, see deeply, and envision what matters most in our lives." His literary achievements include being the first poet laureate of Santa Fe and serving as the first creative writing professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts. He has received numerous prestigious awards such as the National Book Award for "Sight Lines" and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for "Compass Rose."
Sze's poetry has been translated into fifteen languages and is celebrated globally. His latest book, "The White Orchard," provides insight into his creative process and cultural influences through essays, poems, and conversations with other writers. Erin Adair-Hodges from the Museum of New Mexico Press described it as "a visceral joy" that offers much to learn beyond poetry itself.
Adair-Hodges expressed confidence in Sze's new role: "As the U.S. Poet Laureate, Arthur Sze will be a thoughtful steward of the American poetic tradition at a moment when poetry’s truths are needed most."
Sze has lived in Santa Fe since 1972 with his wife Carol Moldaw, who is also a poet. He holds emeritus status at the Institute of American Indian Arts.
The Museum of New Mexico Press is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and aims to preserve and promote art, literature, and culture both within New Mexico and beyond.
