Later that day, she criticized Republican lawmakers and the President in a direct statement. On September 9 at 18:42 UTC, she wrote: "Republicans are mad I called out their Predatory President's coverup and said we need to release the DAMN files. I won't stop. https://t.co/t9brZDY99y".

That evening, Leger Fernández announced a major policy development for New Mexico families. On September 9 at 23:06 UTC, she stated: "GREAT NEWS! Starting Nov 1, New Mexico will be the first state in the nation to guarantee universal child care. This is a big step forward, it:

Saves families ~$12,000/child per year

Allows more parents to work

Invests in early educators

A game-changer for kids,".

Leger Fernández has represented New Mexico in Congress since her initial election victory in 2020 over Alexis Martinez Johnson with 58.7% of the vote to Johnson's 41.3%. She was re-elected in both 2022 and 2024—defeating Martinez Johnson again in 2022 with a margin of roughly sixteen percentage points and winning against Sharon Clahchischilliage in the most recent contest despite Clahchischilliage receiving a higher percentage (43.7%) than previous opponents.
