AmeriCorps funding restored after legal challenge led by New Mexico Attorney General

Attorney General Raúl Torrez has played a key role in securing over $184 million for AmeriCorps service programs. This development follows a lawsuit initiated in April, which contested the proposed funding cuts by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The OMB has now agreed to release the funds, which are vital for AmeriCorps programs nationwide.

Attorney General Torrez emphasized the importance of these funds, stating, "The work of this coalition was crucial in safeguarding these critical funds to AmeriCorps—a vital public service program that steps up when our communities need it most." He highlighted the various services provided by AmeriCorps volunteers, including disaster recovery, youth mentoring, special education support, and assistance for at-risk and homeless youth. New Mexico alone will benefit from a $2 million investment ensuring continued support for these essential services.

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich also praised the outcome, attributing it to Attorney General Torrez's leadership. He remarked on the impact of the funding on New Mexico's youth programs and conservation efforts: "Thanks to Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s leadership, we’ve forced Donald Trump to back down and release the AmeriCorps funding he illegally withheld."

The initial threat involved terminating more than $2 million in grants within New Mexico, affecting numerous community initiatives. Programs across Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Taos, and Ruidoso faced potential disruptions due to these cuts.

In response to OMB's actions under the Trump administration—aimed at eliminating nearly 90% of AmeriCorps' workforce—the coalition filed an amended lawsuit in July. By August 8th, they sought a preliminary injunction against OMB's withholding of funds. Rather than contesting this motion, the administration opted to release all withheld funds by August 28th.

This decision safeguards service programs across America from significant financial setbacks. AmeriCorps plays a crucial role in supporting community needs through volunteer placements both locally and nationally.

New Mexico was joined by several states and jurisdictions led by Maryland's attorney general in challenging these cuts. The collective effort underscores a broad commitment to preserving vital community services supported by AmeriCorps.
