The New Mexico Archaeology Field Training Program is now accepting applications for its upcoming session, which will run from September 2025 through early 2026. This initiative, funded by the New Mexico Legislature in 2025, is a collaboration between the Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA). It aims to provide educational and workforce development opportunities for those interested in pursuing careers in archaeology.

John Taylor-Montoya, PhD, Executive Director of OAS, said, "This is a unique opportunity for New Mexicans to gain in-demand field skills and get a foot in the door of a growing industry." The program offers two tracks: the Field Technician Track, which requires no prior experience and provides entry-level training; and the Supervisor Track, designed for those with or nearing completion of a relevant bachelor's degree.

Applicants must be permanent residents of New Mexico and physically capable of performing fieldwork. The program is free for participants, who will also receive travel support and paid field experience. To apply, candidates need to download an application form from NM-Archaeology-Field-Training-Application-FY25-26.pdf and submit it via email to pdepner@nmda.nmsu.edu.

The Office of Archaeological Studies conducts research across New Mexico with a team of six archaeologists. They work on projects that help identify and interpret historical sites throughout the state. The office serves both state agencies and private organizations requiring archaeological studies for their development projects.
