The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) has announced a series of events throughout September to observe Recovery Awareness Month. The initiative aims to support individuals in recovery and those who assist them.

“In September and every day, we honor the courage of those in recovery and the dedication of the providers, peers, and advocates who support them,” said Secretary Kari Armijo, of the New Mexico Health Care Authority. “We are here to stand with communities across the state to promote healing, reduce stigma, and expand access to behavioral health services.”

The HCA is inviting residents statewide to take part in activities such as community resource fairs, storytelling circles focused on recovery experiences, educational workshops on trauma-informed care and harm reduction, recognition ceremonies, and other events. Details about these events can be found at nmpeercoalition.org.

This year’s theme is “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” According to the HCA, this reflects a focus on equity and inclusion through partnerships with tribal entities, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and people with direct experience in recovery.

“Recovery is a journey of resilience, and no one walks it alone,” said Nick Boukas, director of the Behavioral Health Services Division at the New Mexico Health Care Authority. “Every step forward is made possible when individuals and communities come together.”

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a proclamation designating September 2025 as National Recovery Month in New Mexico. She encourages participation in efforts that promote prevention strategies, celebrate recovery milestones, support mental health wellness initiatives, and strengthen community well-being. The proclamation can be read at September is Recovery Month Proclamation.

The HCA manages programs including Medicaid, SNAP benefits, energy assistance for low-income households (LIHEAP), cash assistance programs, child support services, behavioral health care across New Mexico, licensing for health care facilities and oversight of provider quality standards. The agency also runs state employee health benefits and works to make coverage more affordable through the Health Care Affordability Fund. It provides home- and community-based services for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

The New Mexico Peer Coalition supports peer workers by fostering education and community engagement related to recovery. More than 30 communities will host celebrations during Recovery Month to reduce stigma around substance use disorder and mental illness while connecting people with resources.
