Rep. Dow: 'I will always oppose laws that restrict the 2nd amendment rights of law abiding citizens'

Rebecca Dow, a House representative from New Mexico, has expressed her firm opposition to any restrictions on lawful gun ownership. She cited strong public support for Second Amendment protections in a statement made on the social media platform X.

"I will always oppose laws that restrict the 2nd amendment rights of law abiding citizens," said Rebecca L. Dow, New Mexico State Representative for 38th District (R). "Thank goodness you NM Shooting Sports Association for reminding us of what we already know."

New Mexico has recently become a focal point in the national debate over gun laws. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a June 2025 poll indicated broad bipartisan support for stronger regulations within the state. The poll found that majorities of Democrats and gun owners support policies such as assault weapons bans and extreme risk protection orders. This growing momentum has led to the introduction of multiple firearm bills in the current legislative session.

The 2025 poll conducted by Everytown for Gun Safety revealed that 81% of New Mexicans prioritize gun violence prevention, with 62% supporting an assault weapons ban. Furthermore, 55% of Republicans and 53% of gun owners backed the proposed ban, while 64% supported laws banning devices that convert weapons into assault-style firearms.

Between 2020 and 2025, New Mexico lawmakers enacted several gun control measures. These included a seven-day waiting period for purchases and restrictions on carrying firearms near polling places. As reported by AP News and state legislative records, House Bill 12 in 2025 expanded extreme risk protection orders, while Senate Bill 279 proposed banning assault weapons.

According to the New Mexico Legislature’s official website, Rebecca Dow is a Republican state representative serving District 38, which includes parts of Doña Ana, Sierra, and Socorro counties. She previously held this seat from 2016 to 2022 before returning to office in 2025. Dow is known as a vocal proponent of Second Amendment rights and has opposed recent gun control measures.
