Deb Haaland, a candidate for New Mexico governor, attended National Night Out events in Albuquerque to discuss crime and community safety. During an event in the International District, Haaland spoke about increasing the number of police officers on patrol, promoting community policing, and addressing factors that contribute to crime such as poor lighting, lack of safe spaces, and addiction. In the South Valley, she listened to residents’ concerns about property crime and the presence of ICE in their neighborhoods.

“Every person in New Mexico deserves to live in a safe neighborhood, and that’s why I’m committed to keeping violent criminals behind bars while addressing the root causes of crime,” said Deb Haaland. “Tonight’s events showcase the power of New Mexicans coming together to build safe communities.”

Haaland has made public safety a key issue in her campaign by focusing on officer recruitment and training, supporting community safety programs, and working with local law enforcement agencies. The National Night Out gatherings followed recent meetings she held with law enforcement officials and residents from across New Mexico.

Previously, as Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Haaland led law enforcement agencies within the department and established a task force that set high standards for public protection. She also provided policy guidance, resources, and training for agency staff. While serving in Congress, Haaland helped secure $350 billion for state and local governments and law enforcement agencies nationwide through the American Rescue Plan. Of this amount, $2.5 billion was directed to New Mexico to help keep police officers employed during the pandemic and support local departments.
